Once again, it’s nearing that dreaded Chinese New Year, and is it just me, or does CNY seem to creep up on you earlier and earlier on the calendar with each passing year?

This year, we have barely a little over 3 weeks to recover from our festive year-end fatigue, decide upon a few choice “new year resolutions” to guide us through the year, brace ourselves for the hectic semester ahead, and…*drum roll* throng the crazy shopping crowds at orchard road in order to secure ourselves the perfect brightly-coloured outfits that will receive approving nods from our relatives.

As much as I already feel suffocated from all that activity packed into a mere few weeks, it certainly did not prepare me from the literal suffocation I suffered when I made a brave attempt to do my new year shopping last weekend.

What bothered me most was not so much the desperate frenzy of the shopping crowd. On the contrary, that is something I’m sure we’re all more than used to. The problem was that the moment I stepped into the shopping mall, my senses were severely assaulted.

I literally saw red everywhere: the bright cherry-red lanterns hanging from the ceiling, the crimson cloth draping on the railings, as well as huge red and golden Chinese characters shouting out auspicious greetings from every corner of the mall. On top of that, in every single boutique I entered, I found rack upon rack of garishly bright clothes, in every shade of red, orange, yellow and floral imaginable.
