Romancing Singapore

Written by Shiau Yinn

It was the first formal dinner of the academic year 08/09; the first ever for our freshmen as Shearites. Snuggled comfortably in the midst of the IBG hype, hundreds of Shearites convened at the Comm Hall on Wednesday night for SNDC to celebrate the 43rd birthday of Singapore.

It was a night of “Romancing Singapore” indeed. The ambience was wonderful, with candles on the tables, heart-shaped balloons, and a patriotic theme of red and white enveloping every crook and cranny of Comm Hall. It was a perfect setting for interactions between freshmen and their senior-dates.

The night kicked off with the arrival of Guest of Honor, Mr Zainal Abidin Rasheed, the Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who was also a super senior of DRH (old SH). The singing of the National Anthem followed, after which Master Gary Tan and Invited Guest A/P Tan Teck Boon joined Mr Zainal for the ever essential cutting of the huge cake that was adorned with the Singapore flag.

There were inspirational speeches by Mr Zainal, and also Master Gary, who advised Shearites to ‘look to our left and right and get to know the people we’re with. They may be influential and very famous people one day.’

The performances that followed showcased a number of returning SH classics. Do you remember SHaca’s “Butterfly” from Amplitude and CMB concert? What about SH Band’s “Starlight” (Good Luck Concert 07/08)? Shearites were serenaded by the sweet voices of Geyao and SH Band decided that it was a good time to introduce us to the newest additions to their big Band family: Acer, Juni Goh and C-towner, Ginny.

The night was filled with laughter and fun, and of course, the incessant flashing of cameras as Shearites, guys and girls alike, camwhored their way through the dinner, and a whole lot more after.
