On Thursday, the 23rd of August, a formal dinner was held within Sheares Hall to commemorate Singapore’s 42nd birthday. To make things even more interesting, every freshman would have to ask one of the seniors to date the freshman for the event, and every ‘couple’ would have to exchange presents prior to the start of the dinner. The exchange of gifts and the freshman’s efforts to ‘buaya’ their respective seniors certainly made the event more exciting.
The ceremony started off with the singing of the national anthem followed by the cutting of the cake by Master Gary Tan and representatives of Exxon Mobil, our main sponsors for the event. The ceremony then carried on with dinner where Shearites were served a delcious spread courtesy of Uncle Vincent.
Our invited guests were then taken on a tour of Sheares Hall and were shown the living conditions and amenities available to all Shearites. Everybody was then invited up to the MPSH for the post-dinner concert. Everyone was welcomed by Bona and Shyuan, who were emcees for the evening. The concert started off with the presentation of the Silver Jubilee Award to Lawrence of Block C for his magnanimous contributions to the hall last year as Director of Sports and Chairperson of the Sports Management Board. Shearites were then wowed by the talents of Beatboxer Stitch, an invited beatboxer who somehow managed to sing and provide the rhythym for the song completely on his own. Sheares very own cultural groups; the band, ge yao, shacapella and dance also performed that night. Sheares Hall was then given a preview of the pageant contestants that each individual block had nominated to represent them in the Sheares pageant that was to be held on the 22nd of September at the Grand Copthorne Hotel.
Sheares Hall Rag 0708 appeared on the newspaper this morning! Apologies to the non-Chinese folk of Sheares, please do get your more Chinese- savvy hallmate to translate this for you. I’m quite hopeless at this!
