Shearites gathered excitedly at the MPSH this past Wednesday night, for the annual CMB concert. With an ambience filled with sweetness and surrounded by cut-out lollipops and whimsical swirls, we nibbled onto our cookies that were lovingly baked by CMB – it truly felt like we were in Candyland indeed.
The very first performance was an item entitled “Hometown Glory” by Sheares Dance. Five girls stormed the stage in billowy white shirts, with one more entering via the main doors in prima donna fashion. Through a combination of synchronized ballerina and modern dance moves, the girls channeled raw emotion. The audience was entranced as they watched the girls break free of their imaginary chains and emerge from their solitary confinement into the real world.
SHaca was next, with their own rendition of the classic “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees, as well as “Shiawasemo Akogaremo” – a jazzy Japanese song originally performed by group Try-Tone.
The second dance item saw a confusion of gender identities. The usually poised and demure girls invaded a boys’ school, decked out in tees, bermudas and attitudes to match. Kudos to the smart guys, who saw through the girls’ disguises. After much drama, the dance finished off with a pleasant surprise.
