I recall myself feeling lost and confused when I first heard about Buaya Week. For the past week, I found myself face-to-face with numerous posters, banners and flyers with pictures of cupid, love birds and an overload of mushiness. For the dateless, single mortals like myself, cupid is not exactly man’s best friend. These posters gave me the impression that Buaya Week was going to be something dreadful like Valentine’s Day, that you’ll be shot right through your heart with the cold hard fact that you’re single and alone. But it turned out to be the contrary.
We had an inkling that Buaya Week was going to be a week filled with surprises, love, and (excuse the greed in my tone, but) hopefully presents! What we didn’t know, however, was exactly how great Buaya Week was going to be.
For starters, the early week witnessed the transformation of all blocks into little love shacks at a carnival: hearts hanging from ceilings, elevators with pink and red lighting – block committee members of every block seemed to be painting the town (or in this case, the block) red!
At first, some of this might have seemed a bit overdone. It might even have seemed ridiculous to get so hyped up over doing special things for someone who we’ve never thought of romantically. Yet, as united blocks of one Sheares Hall, we went along with the gearing up and preparations, and anticipated for a week of playful, harmless romance.
The commencement of Buaya Week saw the freshies having their first taste of this unique Sheares Hall tradition, as seniors relived their past Buaya Week experiences. Picking Buayees were an exciting highlight of the evening, especially those who managed to pick the Buayees they secretly wanted! I can just imagine the scandals that are going to be cooked up sooner or later.
