What better way to celebrate Halloween than Night Cycling?

Written by Natalie Yeo

The horrors of night cycling started way before the actual cycling even began. As per Sheares tradition only male – female partners are allowed for the event and this busy bee had to find a partner to go night cycling with her in order to write this article!

Good Luck Concert & IHG Captains’ Treat!

Written by Choong Jia Xin

Good Luck Concert and IHG Captain’s Supper has definitely been splendid for all Shearites on Thursday night! Once again the collaboration between Cultural Management Board (CMB) and Sports Management Board (SMB) was remarkable in organizing this event. The theme “Across the Universe” was clearly seen by the efforts undertaken by the CMB to decorate the entire MPSH with paper cut-outs of aliens, stars and moons.

The night started with Natalie and Gughan as emcees for the evening and the atmosphere was quickly hyped up by the first performance by Sheares Dance – which was totally phenomenal! Both seniors and freshmen groups had electrifying performances with an interesting line-up of songs like Sorry, sorry by Super Junior and Stuttering by Mario.

Are you a SHurvivor?

Sheares Hall seemed to have awoken from its usual vacation slumber over the past few weeks, with the constant hustle and bustle of the Raggers pushing through the final days to Rag Day, and the buzz of excitement from freshmen, our newest additions to the big Sheares Hall family! After a good 6 months of preparation, SWOC 09/10 had put together an exciting program with the theme, “SHurvivor,” to welcome and orientate our freshmen into Sheares Hall!

SWOC 09/10 was definitely a team of daredevils who were not afraid of attempting anything new. The camp that lasted for nearly 2 weeks was one of the longest Sheares Hall had ever seen. SHurvivor started off with 4 days of “Hall orientation,” with Orientation groups consisting of members from different blocks across the Hall. This allowed the freshmen to mix and mingle with fellow Hallmates outside of their Block, before a change of program brought them back to the good old-fashioned “Block Orientation.”

Vacation plans

3 months of vacation is a very long time. A number of us spend it on internships while some try to lighten their semesters’ load by taking special semester. Others just decide to “take a break from it all” a.k.a. slack until the boredom becomes so unbearable, that it makes assignments, lectures and tutorials exciting again (just in time for school to start in August).

For those dedicated to hall, however, holiday plans can be rather different. There’s SECC, that organizes the Sheares Exposure Camp for potential Shearites to experience the vibrancy of Hall life; SWOC, that (as you all should know by now) prepares for the Sheares Welcome Orientation Camp at end of July; whilst those in the Rag team would be busy building the float that will do us proud on Rag Day in August.

And then, there’s Holiday Media Committee (HMC) – a new team, 6 members strong, that had been set up with the sole purpose of keeping Shearites informed with the on-goings of Sheares Hall.

So yes, Shearites, if you’re wondering how the progress is with Rag, or when SECC and SWOC will take place, HMC will be providing fortnightly updates especially for you right here on SHout! Be sure to check back for photos, interviews and more!

Night of 77 Stars

written by Xinying,

Sheares Hall Block C pulled out all the stops for the annual Night of 77 stars. This year’s theme was Journey to the C, a quirky play on the great Chinese novel Journey to the West (西游记). Despite the wet weather, C-Towners came down in droves to support their blockmates. There was also a large show of support from other Shearites who filled the chairs in front of the stage and even spilled onto the rooftop parapets.

In line with the Chinese classic theme, four C-Towners were dressed up elabolrately as Tripitake (唐三藏),  Monkey King (孙悟空),  Zhu Bajie (猪八戒)and Sha Wujing (沙悟净).  Tripitake embarked on a quest to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures with his three disciples, accompanied occasionally by his trusty White Horse (白马), to bless Shearites with CAP 5.0.
