Friends of Rag

Dear Shearites,

Sheares Hall prides itself on sending out quality rag floats every year. This year, we intend to build a truly “Shearite” float, as we intend for the float to be built by the entire hall, and not just raggers alone. We aim to strongly encourage Shearite participation in the construction of the float, by introducing a “Friend of Rag”.

We are bringing rag to the Shearites in 2 ways:

If you intend to know more about the goings-on of rag, sign up as a “volunteer” Friend of Rag. Volunteers will be kept in the loop via emails or sms, and volunteers are NOT obligated to help with the construction of the float. But, of course, any help you would be willing to give us would be welcome. :)

Volunteer FORs would receive a bi-weekly newsletter, updating you on the status of rag and what would be happening in the upcoming weeks.

If you would prefer a more major role in Rag 0809, but cannot commit 2 months of your time to rag, you can sign up as a “temporary ragger”, or a “mercenary” Friend of Rag. We understand that committing 2 months of your holiday to rag would be a very heavy sacrifice. Thus, “mercenaries” are those of you who might actually consider joining rag, but for only a (continuous) 2 weeks or more (it’s up to you if you want to extend it).

Friends of Rag would be rewarded with committee points for the following Academic Year. Although it would not be as much as  a true ragger, “mercenaries” will definitely receive points, calculated as a fraction of the points of the true ragger. For example, if you sign up as a materials engineer for 3 weeks, while a true materials engineer works for 8, you will receive 3/8 of the total points received by the ragger.

The End of an Era

Written by The Prophet

As I sit here on the last day of term and watch the pieces of my room slowly get packed away into faceless boxes of cardboard, I can’t help but be overwhelmed with emotion, a sense of nostalgia, and a sudden need for verbal diarrhoea. So I decided to write out this piece to share some of my choicest memories of the monumental past four years in hall, and as a tribute to the 50-over graduating year4s who’ve been with me and with this hall from the very first to the very last day of their uni lives. I also write this as a reminder to current and future Shearites, that, even though times are changing (as they inevitably do), the promise of hall remains everlasting. What the hall-life has to offer (especially Sheares Hall) still remains the same, and come what may, fee-hike, points-revision, no-supper, or whatever, its still worth it to stay on as long as you possibly can, no matter what.

But yes, times are definitely changing. In fact, they’ve changed quite a bit even over the course of the four fleeting that I’ve had the honour to spend with this graduating batch of Shearites. And I’m not just talking about things like Cheesy fries jumping from $1.20 in 2004 to $1.80 today, or the flash drives we got free with our laptops increasing in capacity from 64mb back then to 4gb at present, or even how applying for SEP has become the SOP or how Dri-fit has become the preferred material of choice for hall t-shirts. The changes we’ve seen together start with our very first days in Sheares where we were the last batch to experience the so-called Military SWOC, where screaming OVIA! umpteen times a day was hardly unusual. When it was our turn to conduct SWOC, it was the last time (till date) that we were fortunate enough to participate in a traditional Slippery Slope after rag day. We were also lucky enough as freshies, to be able to interact with the year4s back then, who I believe were themselves the last batch of Shearites to have stayed ONE complete year in the Old Sheares Hall - and I dare say some of their old hall culture rubbed onto us (hall-wide ponding, anyone?).

When life gets you down

Written by Yee Mun

Feeling stressed, tired, miserable, disappointed and angst-ridden? Tried everything short of suicide? Fret not; we have all been there at one time or another. Jumping off a building of 8 floors will not solve anything anyway – first, you could die; second, if you fail, you have to go to jail for attempted suicide. Here are a few proven methods of making anyone feel better about that monstrosity called life.

SHout Improvement Ideas

Written by Mingfeng (Director of Media)

[*The following article was adapted from my comment on the following post: http://www.sheares.nus.edu.sg/shout/?p=1001#comment-5307)]

Dear fellow Shearites using SHout,

SHout/forum aka mo-mo-mo-mo-monster portal has been in my mind since the number of comments has been increasing. The beauty of SHout is that anyone, current Shearites, super-seniors and even potential Shearites and the public, can see everything here. Yet it is a bane to look through all these comments at one go. Then again, I do not wish to stifle comments and their flow/speed of post.

Now in MY IDEAL opinion, I really hope that there are at least these 3 channels of feedback: traditional direct channel of looking for any one of us; a more modern, but still quite private, email (shearesjcrc@gmail.com); and the monster portal.
